Photosynthesis Vocab
Photosynthesis: The process where plants make sugar and oxygen
Chloroplast: The organelle in a plant that does photosynthesis. Has 2 membranes
Thylakoid: Membranous sac containing chlorophyll (they look like pancakes)
Granum: Stack of thyiakoids (looks like a stack of pancakes)
Stroma: Fluid within chloroplast that fill the space between thylakoids. (The goo where the pancakes fill)
Chlorophyll: Pigment that absorbs light energy but reflects green light.
Photosystems: Clusters of pigment in your thylakoid
Light Dependent Reactions: Require light directly. Occur in thylakoid of chloroplast. Make energy for the light independent reactions (ATP and NADPH)
Light Independent (Dark) Reactions: Does not require light directly. Occur in stroma at chloroplast. Use energy (ATP & NADPH) from light dependent reactions to make sugar/food/carbohydrates.
ATP: Energy (electron carrier)
NADPH: Energy (electron carrier)
Stomata: How CO2 gets into the plant and how oxygen and water get out.

Respiration Vocab
Respiration: Making ATP for the plant and animal cells.
Cristae: The infolding or inward projections of the inner membrane of the mitochondria, which are studded with proteins and increase the surface area for chemical reactions to occur like cellular respiration. (Folds of inner membrane that increase surface area)
ADP: Adenosine Di-phosphate (has two phosphates)
ATP: Adenosine Tri-phosphate (has three phosphates)
Anaerobic: Cannot do for long periods of time
Aerobic: Endurance
Glycolysis: Process of breaking down glucose (sugar)\1st step for anaerobic and aerobic respiration.
